Step 1
A member is recognized by the Chair and makes a motion; must use the words, "I MOVE"
COMMON MISTAKES Members do not wait to be recognized or they begin to discuss their motion before making a motion. In formal settings, member often forget to stand up. |
Step 2
Another member seconds the motion; must say, "I SECOND THE MOTION" or "SECOND."
COMMON MISTAKES You DO NOT have to wait to be recognized by the Chair before saying, "SECOND". Also you DO NOT have to stand up when seconding a motion. |
Step 3
Without changing the wording, the Chair will restate the motion to the assembly by saying, "IT HAS BEEN MOVED AND SECONDED THAT WE ... (restates the original motion)"
COMMON MISTAKES The Chair SHOULD NOT restate the motion differently from what the maker of the motion stated. |
Step 4
The Chair asks for discussion and the members will then debate the motion. The membership will speak in favor and against the motion.
COMMON MISTAKES The discussion can get out of control, lengthy in duration, and lack relevance to what is being discussed. |
Step 5
Chair asks for the affirmative votes & then the negatives votes;
COMMON MISTAKES The Chair says 'All in favor' and fails to tell the members how they will be voting. Example all those in agreement say "AYE", "STAND UP", "RAISE YOUR HAND". or those opposed are not requested or counted. |
Step 6
The Chair will announce the result of the voting.
COMMON MISTAKES Presiding officer fails to pronounce the result of the voting. Remember, if a voice vote is used and you feel the majority could not be determine (i.e. yeas and nays are similar in quantity) you can call for a hand count or Roll Call vote by saying "DIVISION OF THE ASSEMBLY" or "DIVIDE". |
